Author Biography: J. Garry Clifford, professor of political science at the University of Connecticut, is the author of The Citizen Soldiers: The Plattsburg Training Camp Movement, 1913-1920, which won the 1972 Frederick Jackson Turner Prize.
Samuel R. Spencer, Jr., is the author of Decision for War, 1917 and Booker T. Washington and the Negro’s Place in American Life, president emeritus of Davidson College, and president of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges.
